A Craft and Green Living Series to Connect us Back to the Basics

Have you ever wanted to harness the suns energy to cook food? Or find natural ways to relieve winter aches and pains? Whether your interests lie in herbal alternatives, food preservation techniques, or crafts of years past, join us in these beginner-oriented programs. 

Each program is led by skilled instructors whose background is heavily involved in their specific topic.  Each program includes background information, prepared materials to create your own and hands on instruction to complete the project.  By the end of the program, every participant will have a completed project to take home! 

Want to just listen, learn and observe? Some programs are available, at a lower cost, for attendees looking to learn about the product and not create their own.


February 6 – Natural Babies
10:00am – 12:00pm

With all the chemicals in the world it’s nice to know that you can take a proactive role in surrounding your child with safe alternatives.  Holistic mother, Hilde Perala, will be leading this program to show other parents how easy it is to keep children healthy with simple recipes, cleaning products and reusables that save time, money and are safe for your most cherished ones. Preregistration and payment required by January 29th.  Cost is $10/person.


March 13 – Home Brewed Beer
9:00am – 1:00pm

Beer-w400-h400Join Randy, from Viking Brewery out of Dallas Wisconsin, at Hunt Hill to explore the art of beer making.  Participants will learn how to create their own brews using the materials provided in the program. Study from a real brewer about the do’s and dont’s of beer making so you can begin making your own in no time! Participants need to be over 21 and should bring a bag lunch.  Each participant will recieve  all the materials needed to immediately begin brewing beer in their own homes! Preregistration and payment required by February 26. Cost is $60/person and includes all materials needed to begin brewing beer and hands on instruction. 
Already have your own brewing equipment? Attend the program to learn more for 10/person.


April 10 – Solar Cooking Oven

Cader Olive, local green living enthusiast and an organizer of the Northwest Wisconsin Sustainable Living Fair will be leading this program on Solar Cooking Ovens.  Solar ovens are an inexpensive and earth-friendly way to bake cookies, cook meats, pasta and soups all while saving you money on electricity! Participants should bring their own lunches and will learn about solar ovens and using precut materials, create their own.  Preregistration and payment required by March 19th.  Buying a solar oven costs upwards of $250 – make your own for only $80!  Learn more about Solar Ovens, without taking one home for $5/person.


May 8 – Compost Bins
9:00am – 11:30am

Join Master Gardener Russ Parker and UW-Extension, Agriculture Development Agent, Kevin Schoessow and discover the art of composting. Not only is composting a great way to reduce your carbon footprint, it also recycles your old food into nutritious soil and saves you $$ on garbage!  Participants will learn about composting and then create their own 3′ x 3′ x 3′ cedar framed compost bin. For participant’s ease, we recommend working in teams of 2. So bring a friend, or partner up when you get here!  We have access to a few electric screwdrivers, however, if you have one, its a good idea to bring it along.  Preregistration and payment required by April 23. Cost is $50/bin.  People interested in learning more, without building their own can attend for a $5/person fee.


June 5 – Basketweavingmarket basket
9:00am – 1:00pm

Learn how to weave your own market basket in this introduction to basketry program. All materials will be provided and everyone will leave with a basket ready to use! Dont forget to wear old clothes, bring a bag lunch and let us provide the refreshments. Preregistration and payment required by May 21.
Cost is $25/basket.


July 31 – Loom Beaded Jewelry
10:00am – ???

Participants will learn bead weaving and make a fabric backed woven bracelet or key chain using beads and a pattern of their choice.  All materials will be provided and you will have a loom to take home along with your bracelet or key chain.  Preregistration and payment required by July 20. Cost is $10/person.


August 28 – Carve Your Own Walking Stick
9:00am – 4:00pm

The program begins with a road trip to find diamond willow, a beautifully twisted and naturally perfect walking stick. Head back to Hutn Hill to learn how to carve your diamond willow safely and easily.  Bring a bag lunch and let us provide beverages! Preregistration and payment required by August 13.  Cost is $10/person.


September 9 – Preserving Foods
5:30pm – 8:00pm

It’s that time of the year when so many people have a bounty of garden goods but not enough meals to eat it all. We’ve invited UW-Extension educators and Master Food Preservers to Hunt Hill, to show us a variety of ways to preserve our foods. Dabble in dehydration, freezing and various canning styles.  Each participant will leave with a personally, hand-made jar of salsa, created from Hunt Hill-grown veggies!  Preregistration and payment required by August 19. Cost is $10/person.


October 9 – Herbal Health
10:00am – ???

Get ready for winter in the northland!  Join  Master Herbalist~Naturopath Gigi Stafne* to learn holistic approaches to keeping your body healthy.  In this program you will learn how to prepare numerous natural and botanical remedies for winter well-being. Take home natural products to get your herbal apothecary started!”

*Gigi Stafne, MH, ND is a local and national educator, writer and activist within ecology, botanical and natural medicine fields.  Additionally, she owns/operates Wild Earth Eco Tours.  Formerly co-owner of Mizizak Kayaks and founder/director of The Center for Healing Arts Herb & Eco School, United Plant Savers Botanical Sanctuary (WI), and Herbalists Without Borders (WI Chapter).  Gigi invites you to dive into the next plant, paddling or cross cultural adventure with her!

 In addition, the costs for the program will be: $30/person fee for just the class and then an additional $15 materials fee for anyone looking to leave with materials as well as learn.  There will be a 5 person minimum and a 20 person maximum.

November 6 – Mittens
9:00am – 3:00pm

Fight back against Old Man Winter with a pair of you very own knit mittens! Whether you are brand new to knitting or an ‘ol pro, learn to read knitting patterns, practice circular knitting, thumb techniques, closing the tip of a mitten and how to shape them for a good fit. Bring your own yarn, or pick through ours to make your very own mittens!  Great for gifts. Preregistration and payment required by October 22. Cost is $30/person.
